SOBEWFF Goes Local

By Mitchell Nover, Melanie Galarce, Santi Cardona, Monique Gonzalez, and Mahogani Jones

Despite the fact that the South Beach Wine & Food Festival has been held in Miami for 16 years now, it hasn’t always represented the local chefs, restaurants, and flavors that our city has to offer. In recent years, however, we’ve noticed a shift towards the highlighting of more of the best and brightest of the South Florida foodie community. Never has that been more evident than this year’s Festival. Instead of events being all about Food Network stars, most events are now fronted by our local culinarians with the celebrity chefs playing the role of supporting players. And, you know what? It’s a beautiful thing.

Add to that the expansion to more neighborhoods and communities off of South Beach and the growing number of “unofficial” ancillary events, and it seems that SOBEWFF has officially gone local. With so much ground to cover this year, here at MMTM Headquarters we also felt the need to activate part of our own local team of foodies to help us cover multiple aspects of the weekend’s activities. The below is a team-effort recap of our 2017 SOBEWFF experiences. We hope you enjoy our take on the 2017 South Beach Wine & Food Festival!

We’re excited to let you get to know them even better in the year to come. And, of course, we couldn’t do any of this without you… Thanks, as always, for following along on our foodie adventures.

Shuck It On Down to Izzy’s Fish & Oyster

By Monique Gonzalez

If you’re a local, and reside on the mainland, chances are you may not frequent South Beach as often as you’d like. (Or, am I just an old lady who just doesn’t get out there as often as I should?) In any case, my latest #MMTM assignment forced me to cross the bridge and boy was it worth it…I fell in love. Her name’s Izzy. Izzy’s Fish & Oyster to be exact. After Mitch’s first visit for brunch after their grand opening, it was my turn to visit to see what was going on a year later.

Izzy’s Brings a Taste of New England to South Beach

Toto, I don’t think we’re in South Beach anymore.

Forget Oz… Izzy’s Fish & Oyster is bringing a taste of New England cuisine to the Miami culinary scene, infusing its SoFi location with a Cape Cod feel. Izzy’s is the brainchild of Jamie DeRosa, one of our favorite Miami chefs and the mastermind behind the dearly-departed Tongue & Cheek (R.I.P.) For those who have visited New England, the concept of Izzy’s is meant to evoke memories of sunny days, balmy nights, sandy toes, and bellies filled with fresh seafood. For those who haven’t, it’s meant to be an introduction to the classic flavors of New England cuisine. Either way, the driving passion is to create a memorable local seafood and beverage dining experience, serving traditional New England fare in a cool, fresh and hip South Beach setting.
