SOBEWFF Goes Local

By Mitchell Nover, Melanie Galarce, Santi Cardona, Monique Gonzalez, and Mahogani Jones

Despite the fact that the South Beach Wine & Food Festival has been held in Miami for 16 years now, it hasn’t always represented the local chefs, restaurants, and flavors that our city has to offer. In recent years, however, we’ve noticed a shift towards the highlighting of more of the best and brightest of the South Florida foodie community. Never has that been more evident than this year’s Festival. Instead of events being all about Food Network stars, most events are now fronted by our local culinarians with the celebrity chefs playing the role of supporting players. And, you know what? It’s a beautiful thing.

Add to that the expansion to more neighborhoods and communities off of South Beach and the growing number of “unofficial” ancillary events, and it seems that SOBEWFF has officially gone local. With so much ground to cover this year, here at MMTM Headquarters we also felt the need to activate part of our own local team of foodies to help us cover multiple aspects of the weekend’s activities. The below is a team-effort recap of our 2017 SOBEWFF experiences. We hope you enjoy our take on the 2017 South Beach Wine & Food Festival!

MMTM’s Best of 2016!

We’re officially in to Week 2 of 2017, but we’re not quite ready to say goodbye to 2016 just yet and are taking one final chance to reminisce about our “Year in Food” in 2016. In looking back at some of our best bites (and sips) across Miami this past year we’re adding in a few more opinions this time around, with some favorites from our new contributing writers as well. 2016 was a great year of growth for us here at MMTM Headquarters and we couldn’t have done it without them. We’re excited to let you get to know them even better in the year to come. And, of course, we couldn’t do any of this without you… Thanks, as always, for following along on our foodie adventures.

A Bigger, Bolder Barley

By Santiago Cardona

Welcome to Barley, the newest focal point of Downtown Dadeland. Some of you may be saying that this restaurant has existed in Miami for a few years now, and that is true. But the thing is, it just moved to a new location, and this joint has received a major upgrade that is in line with any Kardashian facelift.

MMTM’s Best of 2015!

It’s hard to believe that it’s already time for our final blog post of the year. We’ve officially made it to the end of 2015 and what a year it’s been! In our second year of blogging we dined and drank our way across Miami, making lots of new #foodiefriends along the way. As excited as we are for what 2016 has in store for us, we thought we should take one final look back at the foodie year that was 2015. Enjoy!

Barley Does Breakfast for Dinner

“Breakfast for dinner.”

Growing up, hearing my mom utter those three words was all it took to take me to a state of euphoria. Scrambled eggs, bacon, pancakes, French toast…all perfectly delicious options in the morning, but eating them at night? That’s just a next level kind of situation. There’s something about those feelings of defiance and rebellion; the fact that you’re eating something that’s traditionally meant for daytime consumption after dark. It’s the stuff that dreams are made of. Pure bliss.

#FoodieFriends – Santi Cardona

Santiago “Santi” Cardona is a name you might not know, but you should. As a writer (see Miami Culinary Tours, Haute Dining), baker (check him out on Instagram and at Buttercream Cupcakes & Coffee), and restaurant industry veteran (having worked at Lokal and Kush), he’s pretty much a renaissance man of the Miami food scene. Most importantly, however, Santi is just an all around nice guy and we couldn’t be more thrilled to share some insights into his background and Miami food picks with you in this month’s #FoodieFriends interview. May also happens to be Santi’s birthday month so be sure to wish him a happy belated!
