Plomo Tequila & Taco Bar (230 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables) is the first of its kind in Coral Gables: a cool, unassuming taco bar in the heart of Miracle Mile that offers really good Mexican food and even better drink specials every day of the week. The restaurant has a cool retro Mexican ambience (think Calavera paintings on the walls) and vibrant décor reminiscent of a Mexican speakeasy.
Menu highlights: I obviously had to try a few tacos including the Plomo Taco, which brings lomo salteado (or chicken if you prefer), soy, tomatoes, and onions. I also tried my personal favorite, La Serena with snapper, tomatoes, onions, and salsa. You’ll notice that most of the tacos on the menu are as forthcoming as the ones we chose. They’re not fancy or presumptuous, just plain ol’ simple and good, which makes your dining experience uncomplicated and fun.
You might want to also venture outside your comfort zone and order menu items like the Queso Fundido, which brings melted Oaxaca and Monterey Jack cheeses, and seasonal mushrooms, as well as the Chicken Quesadilla Classic, a generous portion of crispy flour tortilla, Chihuahua cheese, ragas mushroom mix, guacamole, sour cream, and pico de gallo.
Standout dish: At Plomo Tequila & Taco Bar, the real “standout” isn’t really a dish per se, it’s more of the specials that are offered throughout the week. On Mondays, all drinks are 2 for 1; Taco Tuesday means all tacos are $3 with a plethora of drink specials to accompany said tacos; beer and wine is highly discounted on Wednesdays; and on Thursdays, ladies get free Champagne with their food order and can enjoy other drink specials. It seems there really is something for everyone to enjoy, every day of the week.
Are we boozing? Holy hell yes. At Plomo Tequila & Taco Bar, you’ll get to enjoy Happy Hour every day from 4-8PM. Yes, that includes weekends, and yes, I said 8PM. All tacos are $3, margaritas and micheladas are $5, and you can even indulge in pitchers of Sangria for $18. Does it really get any better than that? Brunch also launched recently, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4PM you can enjoy bottomless mimosas and sangria for only $15. I wasn’t kidding when I said this place is king at libations. I dare you to find a better happy hour special on any given day in Coral Gables…
Check this place out if you like: Taco bar favorites that have popped up in Miami the last few years including Coyo Taco, Taquiza, and Lolo’s Surf Cantina. Expect way better booze deals at this taco joint.
Mel’s take: This is the kind of place I would seriously frequent if I was in my 20s, single, and looking for a very good happy hour deal with my girlfriends. My reality looks a bit more like 33-year-old who is 8 months pregnant, but my husband and I will definitely be making a post-baby visit since the place has pretty darn good Mexican food and incredible drink specials. The location also doesn’t get any better than this in Coral Gables; it’s smack in the middle of Miracle Mile, making it centrally located in Miami. If you’re in this hood and in search of a good drink special, this is your go-to spot. Cheers!
