Foodie Friday – Local Edition

Foodies, we made it through February and survived another SOBEWFF (albeit with a few extra pounds on the scale). But, just because the King of Food Festivals is over, that doesn’t mean we can stay in our food coma for much longer. March is truly coming in like a lion with plenty of new openings, special offerings, and more foodie events hitting us hard all month long. From Cork & Fork to Cochon555 to Donuts! and much, much more, let’s keep our belts loose and enjoy another gluttonous month here in the Magic City – the beach bod can wait. SOBEWFF Goes Local

Despite the fact that the South Beach Wine & Food Festival has been held in Miami for 16 years now, it hasn’t always represented the local chefs, restaurants, and flavors that our city has to offer. In recent years, however, we’ve noticed a shift towards the highlighting of more of the best and brightest of the South Florida foodie community. Never has that been more evident than this year’s Festival. Instead of events being all about Food Network stars, most events are now fronted by our local culinarians with the celebrity chefs playing the role of supporting players. And, you know what? It’s a beautiful thing.

Add to that the expansion to more neighborhoods and communities off of South Beach and the growing number of “unofficial” ancillary events, and it seems that SOBEWFF has officially gone local. With so much ground to cover this year, here at MMTM Headquarters we also felt the need to activate part of our own local team of foodies to help us cover multiple aspects of the weekend’s activities. You Win Some, You Dim Sum

Phuc Yea (7100 Biscayne Blvd, MiMo) is the brainchild of husband and wife team, Chef Cesar Zapata and Aniece, of The Federal fame. But, did you know, that Phuc Yea was actually their first restaurant collaboration? That’s right, the Viet-Cajun concept (yes, you read that right) was born back in 2011 as Miami’s first pop-up restaurant, and now this true labor of love is back in full-force with its own permanent space and an innovative Vietnamese inspired, Cajun influenced menu that is “phucking” fantastic.

South Pointe Tavern Meets South Beach

Along with your drink of choice you can enjoy small bites, ceviches, charcuterie, and more. The South of Fifth tavern offers a corner wrap-around terrace and an indoor area with exposed-brick walls to cool off during the warm Miami winters.

Chef’s Corner – Roberto Dubois

Chef Roberto Dubois became passionate about food by learning to cook from his grandmothers and working as a teenager in his father’s restaurant. He learned the art of butchering and the finer aspects of organic gardening, which led him to later open his own restaurant. He enrolled in culinary school in El Salvador where he graduated as Valedictorian of his class. After graduating, Chef Dubois traveled around the world learning different types of cuisines, continuing to gain experience through stints at restaurants like Juvia, Makoto, Juniper on the Water, Klima, and Azul at the Mandarin Oriental. Since June 2016, Chef Dubois has brought his talent to Vagabond Kitchen and Bar, where he focuses on giving guests quality food with the freshest ingredients and aims to enhance the MiMo district with amazing food, drinks and ambiance.

Lolo’s Surf Cantina Lands in Miami
