What’s better than a delicious plate of food with an ice-cold beer? Well, Brewery Ommegang has developed a whole culinary competition based on a firm belief that great beer deserves great food. Now in its third year, the nationally acclaimed HopChef event nurtures and celebrates the beer and food-loving community, and this Monday visited our fair city for the first time ever as part of an eight city nationwide tour.
We’ve discovered a culinary shopping gem and the moment we found it, we knew we had to blog and share it with you. EVOOBOTTEGA, EVOO which stands for Extra Virgin Olive Oil, is the first olive oil tasting store in Miami. As a Miami native, the concept seemed brilliant (I’ve never seen anything like it) but after some research it seems like they’re all over the US – even Florida!
Hope you all had a great, productive week because it’s now officially Friday and the weekend kicks off. In fact, it’s the last Friday of April and we’d give you a big spiel about how 2014 needs to slow down and take it easy, but we’ll save you the lecture. What we’ll do instead is share some of our favorite food finds from around the web and wish you a fun, indulgent weekend!
I know what you’re gonna say… “Do we really need another Latin-Asian fusion restaurant?” If I’m being honest we probably don’t, especially in downtown Coral Gables where there are at least 10 different Sushi, Latin or fusion options to choose from. But, whether we want them or not, they just keep popping up – the latest being Ikura Sushi Lounge, located in the middle of “Restaurant Row” (aka Giralda Ave.). Now, don’t be fooled, Ikura is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. I recently had the opportunity to check it out, and this place is putting up a serious fight to make a name for itself and stand out from the crowd.
Alan Hughes, Chef/Owner, The Embassy of Well Being and Debauchery
The passion for food has been inherent in Alan Hughes since childhood; from the early beginnings working as an apprentice with Argentina’s premier chef Francis Mallmann to the international kitchens of Europe and the Americas. Never one for conformation, Chef Alan is always on a quest for continuous education, learning new trends and techniques along the way. Chef Alan recently opened The Embassy of Well Being and Debauchery, a gastropub located in Buena Vista East just north of the Design District. However, Chef Alan is more than just a chef extraordinaire with mad catering skills. He’s also a wine aficionado, world traveler, international man of mystery, fierce rocker, singer-songwriter, guitar player, artist and overall extreme character.
You made it – it’s Friday. Holy, Good Friday at that! This day brings all kind of food memories from Mel’s childhood, particularly a very rigid, unspoken house rule that stated thou shall not eat any type of meat, with the exception of fish, on Good Friday. Isn’t it crazy how tradition becomes embedded in our lives? To this day Mel’s Catholic upbringing is somehow engrained and she’s consumed by guilt if she craves red meat. Mitch is Jewish and has his own set of culinary holy holiday rules, and trust his by now he’s sick of eating Matzah (no leavened bread during Passover!). It’s always so interesting to hear how food plays such an integral part in culture and religion. Do you guys have any holy holiday foodie rules? If not, no worries! Below is a fun Friday link pack, because let’s be honest, food (in general) is our religion.
We’re huge coffee fans at MMTM and admittedly drink one too many cups of coffee a day. When we heard Nespresso was having a coffee tasting tour across the country with a stop in Miami to promote their new VertuoLine product, we got all giddy. This last Sunday, we headed over to their first stop in Miami at Aventura Mall to see what the buzz was all about.
Do you love beer? Do you love food? If you answered yes to both questions, then you’re bound to love the HopChef Beer and Food Pairing Competition! And if you didn’t answer yes to both questions, what’s wrong with you? (we kid, we kid)
We’re back to regular programming around here with our weekly round up of foodie links. We took a minor break the last two weeks to team up with Visit Miami’s “It’s So MiamiTM: People & Places” campaign. Mel gave you an inside look into Wynwood, while Mitch explored “Little Coconut Gables.” If you haven’t already done so, don’t forget to share your favorite Miami spots, for a chance to win a $1,000 grand prize! While you gather those details, make sure to check the fun food links below and enjoy a kick-ass weekend.
Last week MMTM was invited to an intimate Flor de Caña rum tasting and food pairing in the cool and understated SoFi bar, Radio. What started off as a pop-up bar in early 2013 has transformed into a local favorite, beaming with craft cocktails and laid-back ambiance. With dim lighting, home décor, and a pool table to keep a friendly game going, Radio has become one of Miami’s hidden libation gems.
