Following the success of its Bayside Marketplace location, Mojitobar (2602 Sawgrass Mills Circle, Suite 1219, Sunrise) has opened a second location at the recently renovated Oasis at Sawgrass Mills in collaboration with one of Miami’s most notable celebrity chefs, Douglas Rodriguez. Mojitobar is famous for its Latin flare, live music, energetic DJs, dancing and mixologist-quality, hand-muddled mojitos.
Menu highlights: Being a James Beard award winner and Top Chef Masters veteran, creating the menu at Mojitobar was a bit of a departure for Chef Rodriguez as he’s generally known for preparing the fine dining cuisine that earned him the title “Godfather of Nuevo Latina Cuisine.” At Mojitobar, however, he’s created a fun and eclectic menu to compliment the expansive mojito offerings and the restaurant’s lively atmosphere.
Drawing inspiration from the recent culinary expeditions he curated to Cuba, Chef Rodriguez combines traditional Latin and Cuban flavors with modern dining trends that pair perfectly with the extensive bar menu of cocktails. The “Plates by Douglas Rodriguez” offer a variety of fresh and vibrant dishes including Smoked Pineapple Guacamole with crispy tostones and jalapeños, Crispy Shrimp Chicharrones with fiery buttermilk glaze, Corvina Watermelon Ceviche with yuzu, orange zest, tarragon, Thai basil, and red onion, and Mixto Leche de Tigre Ceviche with shrimp, calamari, and corvina, among others.
Standout dishes: Overall, I really enjoyed the small plates section of the Mojitobar menu, as I think they are perfect snack-sized treats for a pit stop before, during, or after checking out the stores at Sawgrass Mills. More specifically, the Cuban Sandwich on a Stick is a super fun, modern interpretation on the famed lunch treat that offers a great quick bite that won’t put you directly into a food coma afterwards (because, you know, there’s still a lot of shopping to do). And, of course, pair it with a Classic Mojito for a good measure.
Are we boozing? Well, the restaurant is literally named after a drink. So… yes, we’re definitely boozing. And, while the classic mojito is classic for a reason, there are a few additional flavors – like the Watermelon, Coconut, and Passion Fruit Mojitos – that pair really well with the variety of food options on the Mojitobar menu.
Mitch’s take: Whether for a casual lunch or dinner in between shopping, group celebrations, late night partying, or before, during, or after events held at the adjacent BB&T Center, Mojitobar has something for everyone and is destined to be a highlight of The Oasis at Sawgrass Mills makeover.
