We’ve only actually met Nick Pena once, although it feels like we’ve been friends for a while. That’s because Nick (aka Nick on the Radio) has been gracing our airwaves for years as part of the Mack with Nina and Nick show on Y-100. Then, when we got into the food blogging game, we started to see Nick around a lot of the same events we were attending. That’s because Nick has a second alias – Nick the Food-e. Needless to say, the guy’s got a lot going on, so it was very nice of him to make some time out of his busy schedule to meet with Mitch at The Rum Line for this month’s edition of #FoodieFriends.
For Nick, his mission at thefood-e.com is very simple: to conquer one Miami restaurant at a time. We’d say he’s well on his way. To get a little better understanding on what motivates him to keep going on his culinary quest, read our interview below…
What is your favorite thing about Miami?
I was born and raised in Miami. I have seen it grow into the amazing city that it is today. I know the humidity is ridiculous, but the weather here is awesome. Shorts and sandals all year long.
What are your top 3 Miami restaurant/bar picks?
I have so many favorites. I can’t just pick 3!!! But here are some of my favorites at the moment: Alter, Blackbrick, Edge, Joe’s (can’t wait for the opening next month), Quality Meats and of course Shake Shack.
Which Miami neighborhood best personifies you?
I would say Wynwood or Mid Beach area. I try to be hipster, but I’m really not.
Other than Miami, what foodie city would you like to live in?
Easy! New York City. I try to visit NYC at least twice or thee times a year and just eat and drink. Sort of like a mini food tour.
How did you get into blogging?
So about 5 years ago, I flew out to LA for work with some friends and we were just talking over dinner and my friend was like you really like food, you should start a blog or something. So that’s kind of where the idea came from. The rest is history. Shout out to Johnny Promo.

How do you stay informed about the Miami food scene?
Seeing what other friends are eating on social media and just checking out places through word of mouth.
What is your foodie motto?
#NeverStopEating or #NeverStopDrinking
What are some of your non-food-related hobbies?
Traveling is definitely one of them. Even though, I tend to travel for food.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Hopping on your own private jet whenever you want and wherever you want. Not a care in the world.
Which talent would you most like to have?
The ability to eat and not gain weight. Just be one of those people who have amazing metabolisms.
If you only could eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Burgers… from Shake Shack. 🍔🍔🍔
Who is your favorite chef and why?
I wouldn’t say he’s my favorite, but I am a huge fan of David Chang. I think everything he does is money! 💰💰💰
What food trend are you most into right now and what food trend would you most like to go away?
I’m really into the fried chicken sandwich thing going on in NYC right now. It’s all the rage and i’m into it.
One thing I wouldn’t like to go away, but I would like it to slow down a bit and that is taco shops. Sooooo many new taco shops in Miami. I love tacos, but give me a few months to catch up.
Do you cook? If so, what’s your favorite dish to prepare?
Do I cook? Of course! I make a mean steak on the grill, thanks to seasoning from Chef Aaron Brooks of Edge, Steak and Bar! 🔥
