Foodie Friday – Local Edition

Well, that was certainly an exciting first week of October! Luckily, we missed any major issues with Hurricane Matthew down here in Miami, and now we’re ready to look forward to the remainder of the month and all the fun, exciting, and delicious foodie happenings that it has in store for us. Below is our monthly round-up of what October is bringing – from Oktoberfest to Halloween and everything in between. Enjoy!

New Restaurant Openings & Menu Additions
This past month, Key Largo welcomed its first steakhouse (La Marea) and ceviche bar (Las Olas)! Just a short drive from Miami, La Marea and Las Olas both aim to expand the culinary palette of the waterfront destination. The chic yet relaxed restaurants are two of four dining venues at Playa Largo Resort & Spa, the first new resort built in the Upper Keys in more than 21 years and the 100th addition to Autograph Collection Hotels.

Happy Wine in Coconut Grove is excited to debut a new happy hour menu, featuring special items priced at $5. Dishes will include their signature Albondigas, Shishito Peppers, Homemade Flatbread, and Fried Chickpeas. Guests will be able to choose between white or red sangria or white or red wine by the glass, while beer connoisseurs can choose from local varieties including La Rubia from Wynwood Brewing, La Colada Porta by Biscayne Brewing Company, or Mahou from Madrid.

Miami’s newest Italian hotspot, Ocio is excited to unveil a new happy hour at their secluded and chic retreat. Tucked away in Doral, the restaurant will offer an irresistible incentive Thursday and Friday nights from 5-7:30PM. The happy hour will offer all guests a complimentary appetizer with the purchase of a glass of wine or beer. The accompanying choices from the menu include Fried Mozzarella, an assortment of Antipasto, or Octopus Carpaccio. One free appetizer will be provided with each drink purchased.

Special Menus & Offerings
Start your weekends on Friday, Jr. at Vagabond Kitchen and Bar’s “MiMo Thursdays,” featuring $50 Moet bottles and the chef’s choice of small plates during happy hour from 6PM-9PM. If you feel yourself in a cocktail mood instead, have one of their hand-crafted cocktails for $8 or a well drink for $7. Guests can also enjoy beer and wine during happy hour starting at $5.

Pinch Kitchen will be celebrating Oktoberfest the entire month of October with a two course prix fixe dinner menu paired with a glass of Weihenstephaner Oktoberfestbier, considered one of  “the world’s oldest breweries.” The menu will include Flammekueche (homemade flatbread with Pinch ricotta, caramelized onions, house-cured duroc pork belly) and Kalbsschnitzel (all natural veal schnitzel with house-made coleslaw and a small arugula, tomato salad). The Oktoberfest menu will be available Tuesday through Saturday, during dinner service.

Foodie Events & Happenings
Miami’s first “micro juicery,” Raw Republic Cold-Pressed Micro Juicery, has joined forces with Lululemon at Aventura Mall to present wonderfully zen mornings of complimentary yoga, followed by deliciously healthy, all-natural, and kosher cold-pressed juices and more. Every Sunday, now through October 30th, Lululemon Aventura will offer a complimentary yoga class, designed to align and balance, at its store from 10:30AM–11:30AM, and after the class, participants can enjoy free cold-pressed juices and delicious grab-n-go foods on-site, generously provided by Raw Republic. Yoga class attendees are asked to enter through the Bloomingdale’s garage, 3rd floor by Urban Outfitters. No reservation is required, and classes are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Mark your calendars for the next installment of the all-star chef series, Mendin & Friends. On Wednesday, October 12th, Jose Mendin, Sergio Navarro, and Maria Orantes will come full circle, cooking a 10-course tasting menu alongside their mentor, Master Chef Angel Palacios of the famed La Broche.  Discover Spain’s rich culinary traditions and enjoy as the team at Pubbelly shares in this proud moment. Tickets can be purchased for a 7PM or 9:30PM seating for $85 per person.

The first-annual Grove Garden Brewfest is launching Saturday, October 15th, featuring an all-you-can-sample selection of over 70 beers for only $30 and a delicious menu by Ariete’s Chef Michael Beltran. For all local 33133 residents, Taurus Beer & Whisk(e)y House will also offer 33% off their massive whiskey selection, over 100 to choose from! This pedestrian-friendly community festival, will be held at the Grove Garden, directly behind where Ariete and Taurus meet.

Join Edukos for a Pop Up Beer Garden at theMiami Beach Botanical Garden on October 23rd. The 4-course American + Venezuelan inspired pairing event will be a perfect afternoon of “discovering More together.” Enjoy food and beer pairings, great tunes, and new friends. October is National Pasta Month, and what better excuse is there to satisfy cravings than by carbo-loading at Spasso during a special cooking class? The class will teach out how to prepare homemade pasta from scratch as well as other recipes for classic dishes, such as Carbonara, Cacio e Pepe, and Spaghetti Aglio Olio e Peperoncino. Additionally during National Pasta Month, Spasso will offer half-priced pasta specials for any guests dining after 9PM from Monday through Thursday.

The new Culinary Community for Camillus House just kicked off on October 2nd. Set to run through November 23rd, the program is perfect for food and wine enthusiasts to continue to enjoy delicious meals at discounted prices while benefitting a vital cause that has always been a top priority of the culinary community. To that end, participating restaurants will offer a fixed price two-course lunch for $15 and/or a two-course dinner for $25. Five percent generated from those meals will go directly to Camillus House to feed and house individuals and families in need. The iconic list of participating restaurants includes Barceloneta, River Seafood Oyster Bar, Timo, Café at Books and Books, Soyka Restaurant, Mina’s Mediterraneo, Brasserie Central, Swine Table & Bar, Via Verdi Cucina Italiana, Izzy’s Fish & Oyster Bar, Gusto Fino Italian Café, Los Ranchos Steakhouse, and Mare Mio Restaurant.

In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Fontainebleau Miami Beach has joined forces with Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, South Florida’s leader in breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and care, to host the eighth annual Bleau Goes Pink campaign. To raise both awareness and funds for the cause, the iconic Miami Beach property is offering month-long dining promotions at StripSteak by Michael Mina and Scarpetta. Delectable three course, prix-fixe dinner menus priced at $55 per person will be offered at both signature restaurants. Each includes an appetizer, entrée, dessert, and a glass of Conde de Valdemar Rosé. For every dinner ordered, $5 will be donated to benefit breast cancer research at Sylvester.
