Foodie Friday – Local Edition

Happy May! Can you freaking believe it’s already May??? As summer quickly approaches and the tourists abandon the heat and humidity of Miami, there’s still lots of local foodie options for us non-Snow Birds. We’ve already given you our 10 Mother’s Day dining picks for this year (P.S. it’s this Sunday, stop procrastinating already!), but today we leave you with a round-up of even more gastronomic goings on for the rest of this month. New Restaurant Openings
COYO Taco is opening of its second location in the heart of Miami’s burgeoning Brickell neighborhood. The trendy Mexican taqueria will be located on the ground floor of residential building Axis Brickell, bringing locals and visitors alike a fresh new option for delicious Mexican fare in a casual atmosphere. Slated to open early May, the new Brickell location boasts a larger restaurant space, with 74 seats inside, and an additional 74 seats outside.

Miami Supercar Rooms – the nation’s first auto art gallery and gourmet dining experience – will soon be unveiled in the heart of Wynwood…because Miami. Announced as part of this unique opening is a special menu from GK Bistronomie’s executive chef and owner, Rafael Perez Cambana. For the initial month of guest reservations, Chef Rafael will personally be on-site to welcome guests and introduce his menu every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday before delivering an eclectic culinary array of Peruvian delights, including one of his exquisite signature ceviche dishes.

Goodbye, The Federal. Hello, The Fed! Cesar Zapata and Ani Meinhold are revamping the MiMo restaurant into more of an affordable, healthier weekday dining spot. Shareable plates categorized as “For the Homies” will offer starters for guests to nibble and share, and a selection of hand-pressed and baked “Tostadas”, vegan veggie “Bowls” and Zapata’s interpretation of fajitas dubbed “Skillets,” will provide several affordable choices  from $8 to $14. Don’t worry, the weekends will still feature their signature brunch and bring back some old Federal favorites. The last service for The Federal will be on Sunday, May 8th for Mother’s Day dinner. The restaurant will undergo a design enhancement for approximately a week and then reopen on Tuesday, May 17th with a fresh look and entirely new menu (except brunch).

Special Menus & Offerings
Miami Beach’s award-winning bar, The Rum Line, recently launched a new weekend Happy Hour, Thursday through Sunday from 4-7PM. Wind down the week with a variety of bites, including $1.25 oysters, $3 conch salad, $4 mini oyster po’boys, $3 shrimp tostones, and $4 crispy calamari. You can also get some of their classic cocktails like the mojito, daiquiri, and jungle bird for only $8.

Chef Alberto Cabrera has created a renovated version of the traditional 1950s Cuban taste to Havana 1957, bringing his sazón in a renovated menu that includes new appetizers such as Ceviche, Empanadas de Tasajo, the Frita Cubana, Chicharrones de Puerco, and the out of the ordinary Truffle Yuca Fries; new sandwiches like the Elena Ruz, Frita Cubana, Pan Con Minuta, BBQ Masitas de Puerco, Club Sandwich, and the Ropa Vieja Grilled Cheese for an “a lo cubano” twist on the Philly Cheese Steak; and new, innovative salads such as the Havana 1957 “Chop Chop,” the Asian Salad, and the Cuban Salad, topped with pumpkin and a smoked plantain dressing. Chef Alberto has also created a monthly chef’s menu highlighting classic Cuban dishes with a new school approach. This special menu is featured exclusively at the Pembroke Pines location.

Join 3-star Miami Herald-rated Bocce for an unforgettable wine journey that traverses the map of Italy. Beverage manager Sergio Russo will guide you through a curated wine tasting, educating guests on regions, the craft behind each wine’s production, flavor profiles, and more. While the menu changes on a weekly basis, guests can expect five regional Italian wines, curated Sergio and paired with bites by Chef Nunzio Fuschillo. Reserve now as these special events only take place every other Saturday (they started on April 23rd, you do the math) through the end of June.

The Great American Shake Sale is a company-wide cause marketing initiative taking place through May 31st at all U.S. Shake Shacks (excluding stadiums and airports). Its goal is to raise awareness and funds for No Kid Hungry in its effort to end childhood hunger in America, where 1 in 5 kids in America are living in households without consistent access to food. Throughout May, Shake Shack guests who donate $2 or more to No Kid Hungry will receive a card for a complimentary hand-spun shake—valued at $6.00—redeemable on their next visit. One hundred percent of donations will benefit No Kid Hungry.

Foodie Events
Do you like magic? Join us for a very special edition of Nutritious Nights tonight, May 6th, at The Wynwood Yard. Feed your mind and body with thrilling libations and clean food. Doc Mait, who is pioneering holistic concierge medical services with Pulse & Remedy in South Florida, provides enlightening conversation on nutrition’s role in optimal health; live jazz by local phenomenon Jahzel Dotel will swell your satisfied soul; Nutritionist Susan Duprey’ will provide a plant-based menu for the evening; and creative cocktail pairings will include Prosecco, rosewater coconut Kefir, citrus kombucha, and Buffalo Trace Bourbon with turmeric ACV shrub and raw local honey.

Nutritious Nights Dinner

On May 11th Seaspice will host a fundraising event benefitting Design Techo, a charity that mobilizes our youth globally and empowers them to eradicate poverty, transform slums into sustainable and organized communities, while highlighting what makes Brazilian culture beautiful. The 4th annual fundraising evening will be filled with musical live performances including Brazilian Singer Rose Max, pianist Ana Nikolec, a Brazilian Carnival by Escola de Samba, a demonstration by Capoeira Escola and a rock concert by Latin band Pampa y la Via, as guests are welcomed with complimentary caipirinhas and hors d’oeuvres. Please advised the minimum admission donation is $30.

Brickell Living will host its inaugural Brickell Restaurant Week from May 12-19. This new event was created by locals primarily for enhancing community engagement and development in the diverse culinary scene of Downtown Miami and Brickell. Greater Downtown Miami is bursting at the seams with more than 300 restaurants and Brickell Restaurant Week will feature special prix fixe lunch and/or dinner options at Downtown Miami’s finest restaurants such as Area 31, Marion Restaurant, Touche, Americal Social, Segafredo, Akoya, Crazy About You, Dolores But You Can Call Me Lolita, and more. During Brickell Restaurant Week, menu options will include 3-course lunches for $20 and dinners for $35.

On May 13th, New Amsterdam Vodka is teaming up with local street artist Daniel “Krave” Fila for an “It’s Your Town” party  to celebrate the vibrant culture and people of Miami. Krave is best known for his signature character, The Fresh Monkey, and his semi-nude mural Erin in the Miami Design District and will will be creating several works of art inspired by Miami, including a larger-than-life mural in Little Havana. The event is free and open to the public (ages 21+) and will also have custom Miami-inspired cocktails on hand, crafted just for this event by our New Amsterdam Vodka mixologist.

Yelp is bringing a Caribbean Carnival celebration to Little Haiti and you’re invited! National Burger Month
Pincho Factory, the local family-owned fast casual concept behind the award-winning Croquetessa and Tostón burgers, is the Mecca for National Burger Month. This year marks the return of the highly-anticipated fan favorite, the Quesadilla Burger, a custom blend of chuck brisket and short rib patty with queso fresco, guacamole, and pico de Gallo in between two quesadillas. The brand’s four South Florida locations will serve up their signature menu items featuring unique burgers including the Pincho Burger, Tostón Burger, and the “secret” Foreman, a burger between two grilled cheese sandwiches.

The Dutch, award-winning Chef Andrew Carmellini’s roots-inspired American restaurant, is celebrating National Burger Month with the Prime Burger, a lunch exclusive topped with cheddar and secret sauce on a classic sesame bun for $22. The Dutch is located inside W South Beach Hotel & Residences. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (305) 938-3111 or booking online.

Meat Market, Lincoln Road’s premier contemporary steakhouse and seafood restaurant, is celebrating National Burger Month with specialty burgers from executive chef/co-owner Sean Brasel. Whether you’re dining al fresco on Lincoln Road or inside the South Beach eatery, there is a patty to please any palate, including the brand new Miami Smokers BBQ Burger, featuring a Miami Smokers blend with roasted pineapple BBQ sauce, bacon, and gruyere cheese. Also available are the selection of rotating burger specials, such as the Italian Buffalo Burger – house ground buffalo, crispy fried buffalo mozzarella, grilled marinated radicchio, spicy dried tomato pesto, and fresh basil aioli served on a wood grilled sesame brioche bun; Prime Smoked Short Rib Burger – an 8 oz short rib delight with 1000 mango island, arugula, purple cabbage slaw, gouda cheese, and fried onions; and the American Wagyu Burger – a spin on the classic with bacon, jalapeño relish, avocado, gruyere cheese, lettuce, and tomato. Beaker & Gray, the Wynwood hit that has charmed the public with their global-inspired fare and inventive cocktails, is serving up a new lunchtime favorite just in time for National Burger Month. Looking for a burger with simple ingredients and spectacular taste? Look no further than the Wagyu Burger, served with beer-soaked tomatillo, gouda, and pickled cucumber.

Kona Grill, the upscale casual American grill and sushi bar located in Dolphin Mall’s new restaurant plaza, has quickly gained a reputation as the best place in Doral to enjoy a great meal at a good value, thanks to its cool, casual, and sophisticated environment. For Burger Month, Kona Grill is pulling out all the stops with the Brisket Burger, a hearty and filling mix of ground beef brisket, accompanied by cheddar, bacon onion jam, lettuce, tomato, brioche, a homemade pickle spear, and a side of fries. Also try the Big Kahuna Cheeseburger, a feast of caramelized onion, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, brioche, homemade pickle spear, fries, and Applewood smoked bacon.

In honor of National Burger Month, BLT Prime will once again offer diners its delicious and beloved Burger Board for lunch from 11AM to 3 PM, Monday through Friday. Available all month long, the menu revisits popular favorites along with some tantalizing new additions. With a nod to the restaurant’s location overlooking the famed Blue Monster Golf Course, the burgers bear the names of popular golf terms from the Blind Shot (a marinated grilled chicken and avocado taste sensation) to the newly crowned Caddie (burger blend, sliced brisket, fried cheese curd, jalapeño bacon and jerk glaze) and the Eagle (a must-be-tasted to be believed burger blend topped with white cheddar, poached lobster and truffle buttermilk dressing). All 8oz. burgers are served with BLT Prime’s trademark fries. Guests can also enjoy $5 draft beer of choice with the purchase of any burger.

Finally, Michael Mina 74, the casual bistro known for its legendary burgers, has created a stellar burger menu available throughout the month of May. For a limited time, guests can partake in one of the most highly-anticipated MM74 food holidays of the year and treat themselves to enticing new burgers, savory lobster corn dogs or – for the kid in all of us – enjoy crispy tater tots with house-smoked bacon and good old-fashioned floats with a boozy twist. From MM74 classics such as the Dry-Aged Steak Burger and the Peanut Butter Crunch Burger to a new Vegetable Mille Feuille with smoked eggplant, grilled zucchini and mozzarella cheese, burger enthusiasts will have plenty of options to choose from.
