Foodie Friday – Local Edition

We finally made it to December and the holidays are upon us! It certainly is the most wonderful time of the year, especially for us foodies. The Thanksgiving appetizer is behind us and we’re ready to dig into the main course with Art Basel and Miami Art Week hitting their stride this weekend. And, we can’t forget the extreme amounts of lechón that will be entering our lives come Christmas and New Year’s (with a side of Hanukkah potato latkes for Mitch). As if that wasn’t enough, there’s still plenty to see and do, eat and drink this December in the Magic City.  Below is our monthly round-up of what the month ahead has in store for us here in Miami. New Restaurant Openings & Menu Additions
OLLA opened its doors on Lincoln Road this Monday. The restaurant will use modern techniques and global influences to celebrate the authenticity of Mexican roots and feature the diverse regional cuisines from Oaxaca to Puebla to Yucatan to Veracruz and beyond. Helmed by Chef Scott Linquist of COYO Taco, the concept was designed as a destination driven towards locals with affordable prices while still delivering a superior experience. OLLA will be open for dinner seven days a week with lunch and brunch to be announced.

Bitter Truth, a refreshing addition to the already bustling Midtown Miami, opened its doors on Wednesday. Bringing old school hip-hop and live local musicians together with some of the craftiest drinks in the game, Bitter Truth is a collaboration brought together by award-winning bartenders Bryan Canales, Teddy Collins, Sarah Porter, and Ryan Alfrey. The operating partners started as bartenders and bar backs together at watering holes such as Blue Martini and pool parties at The Shelbourne. Collectively, they moved from bartenders to bar managers to general managers and program directors, experiencing every part of the industry from sweeping floors, to serving celebrity guests in the Magic City. Bitter Truth will have a full bar with the latest seasonal craft beers and an extensive craft cocktail menu.

STK Miami is launching Sunday brunch service this weekend, on December 4th. Constantly blurring the lines between fine dining and a social, high-energy lounge, STK Miami will offer an à la carte brunch (yes, you can have a large steak for brunch), with a side of Magic City views and amplified beats by live DJs from 11 AM until 4 PM every Sunday. Now what really matters: the bottomless drinks. For $21.99 guests may enjoy Bottomless Mimosas and Belvedere Bloody Marys. And for those looking to elevate their brunch experience further, Bottomless Veuve Cliquot mimosas will be available for $50. Guests must purchase a brunch entree to buy into the bottomless options and there will be a 1.5 hour time limit.

Floridians and guests alike can enjoy the winter breeze with Rosé Sangria in hand and a bite full of coconut pancake at Matador Terrace for its new brunch offerings. The Miami Beach EDITION’s al fresco dining area recently launched its weekend brunch designed by Michelin Star Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten with Top Chef winner and Executive Chef Jeremy Ford at the helm of the kitchen. Chef Jean-Georges offers a distinct, modern interpretation of Latin cuisine influenced by Spanish, Caribbean and South American flavors that are integral to Miami. For weekend brunch, Chef Ford dishes out a variety of options that feature locally sourced and sustainable ingredients. Guests may enjoy the lush oasis and beachfront views with a one-of-a-kind ambiance alongside Matador’s award-winning cuisine. Brunch at Matador Terrace is offered Saturday and Sunday, from 10AM – 4PM and will run through spring of 2017.

Chef Richard Hales has officially opened his next restaurant venture, Bird & Bone, at The Confidante on Miami Beach. The new restaurant will showcase Chef Hales’ take on the American culinary landscape, meaning a menu that reflects the heart and soul of traditional country cuisine from independent small farms and organic butchers, touching on his passion for Southern dining. Alongside daily specials like the aptly named “Bone of the Day” and “Bird of the Day, menu highlights will include Slow Roasted Lamb Ribs with White BBQ Sauce, Charred Cauliflower, and Cayenne Pepper, and Mason Jar Snacks like Deviled Ham, Smoked Potato & Egg Salad, Pimento Cheese, and Oxtail with Benne Seed Wafers. Desserts will be a twist on Southern classics by Chef Hales’ wife, Jenny Hales, including Bourbon Cake with Cinnamon Whipped Cream topped with Candied Pecans. Bird & Bone will be open for breakfast and dinner with lunch available poolside. Brunch will be served on Sundays.

New York’s premier lobster roll purveyor, Luke’s Lobster, will have it’s grand opening on December 5th at Brickell City Center. The Burger Museum by Burger Beast, America’s only Museum devoted to burgers and comfort food opens its doors today. The 1500 square foot museum is conveniently located in the heart of Miami at Magic City Casino and will house more than 2,000 pieces of historical artifacts, collectibles and ephemera from burger and comfort food restaurants around the United States. Playing in the mini Burger Museum Theater sponsored by Pincho Factory is the film “Hamburger America” with a new introduction by its director, award-winning filmmaker George Motz. Also, a selection of old school candies and glass bottled sodas will be also available for sale in the lobby for those looking to relive simpler times. The Burger Museum by Burger Beast will be open Thursday – Sunday from 12PM-8PM. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Parking is free.

Special Menus & Offerings
Lure Fishbar will be taking surf and turf to the next level with the pop-up of Mercer Street Hospitality’s John McDonald and Chef/Partner Josh Capon’s meat-centric eatery, Bowery Meat Company. The iconic restaurant located in downtown NYC, just off Bowery and 1st Street, is diverse and market-driven featuring a range of menu items from fresh seafood to pasta and beef from Diamond Creek Ranch, domestic Colorado lamb, veal, pork, and more. Throughout the month of December, diners can enjoy a rotating menu of Bowery Meat Company’s signature items alongside Lure Fishbar’s robust menu of fresh seafood favorites.

DIRT, the popular Miami Beach hotspot that combines responsibly sourced ingredients and chef-driven, globally inspired flavors, will me opening a pop-up inside Aventura Mall this month. The pop-up will offer a variety of convenient, fresh, and portable menu items, perfect for on-the-go shoppers browsing the mall’s upscale boutiques and retail shops. DIRT’s pop-up menu will differ slightly from the menu served at the South Beach and soon-to-open Brickell locations with an approach they’re calling ‘DIRT Lite.’ Basically, the idea is to offer chef-driven fare to guests with minimal wait time, giving them the boost needed to enjoy their shopping experience while feeling satisfied rather than lethargic. DIRT’s Aventura Mall outpost will be located on the lower level of the mall’s Nordstrom wing.

Foodie Events & Happenings
In double OLLA news, the new Mexican hotspot is sending off Art Basel in style with a brunch fiesta this Sunday, December 4th. From 12-8PM, bottomless drinks (Margaritas, Micheladas, Bloody Marias, and Mimosas) will be flowing alongside Mexican-inspired breakfast classics like Huevos Rancheros and Chilaquiles as well as the regular a la carte menu. Because it wouldn’t be a real fiesta without music, DJ Bass Reeves will be spinning from until 5PM, followed by DJ Supra to shut the party down. During the fiesta, guest can also expect fun surprises and maybe a congo line here or there. In addition to this weekend, the restaurant will launch a brunch party on the first Sunday of each month moving forward.

The Bon Vivants and The Daily Beast, in partnership with Imbibe and the USBG National Charity Foundation, are pleased to announce the third annual Swig n’ Swine Art Basel Miami Beach. The charitable event series that combines philanthropy, community, pork and punch will come to the international art show for the third time, on Sunday, December 4th from 2-7PM. Art aficionados, bartenders, culinary stars, and creative industry professionals from around the world will converge at The Broken Shaker at Freehand Miami for a celebration of community, camaraderie and giving back. DJs will spin all afternoon and provide a soundtrack to the gallons of punch and all-you-can eat feast of pork-centric dishes. Eight barrels of punch will flow freely throughout the afternoon with an all-star roster of culinary talent preparing the Swig n’ Swine menu, including The Bon Vivants’ Founding Partner Scott Baird and local chefs Dale Talde of TALDE Miami Beach, Halid Quiroz of Sweet Liberty Drinks & Supply Co., and Orsenis Perez of The Anderson. Admission to Swig n’ Swine Art Basel is $40 per person and 100% of proceeds are donated to charity.
