A Culinary Tour de Force at City Place Doral

By Caitlin Marino

City Place Doral (8300 Northwest 36 Street, Doral) has become the epicenter of the ever-booming city of Doral. Not only are there a myriad of upscale restaurants to accommodate the whole family (regardless of cravings), but CityPlace Doral is also home to shopping and entertainment options that make the chic establishment a one-stop shop for all. I was recently invited to visit three of the newly opened restaurants – Kings Bowl, Icebox Café and Angelo Elia Pizza, Bar & Tapas. Below is a gluttonous round-up of my experience, so you can get a few ideas for your next City Place Doral visit.

Kings Bowl
While, yes, Kings Bowl is fundamentally a bowling alley, the Boston born establishment has grown over the past decade to fuse food, cocktails, and social gaming to create the “ultimate gaming experience.” Whether you’re in the mood for an afternoon of some good ol’ bowling with the fam or want to gather your friends for some games of competitive air hockey or karaoke, Kings Bowl is your go-to. The food is also pretty darn good!

Menu highlights: Bang Bang Calamari – flash fried and tossed in sweet chili sauce with spicy fried peppers, crushed peanuts and pineapples. This is the prefect seafood option to get the games started.

Sunny Burger  this delicious burger was a stand out, topped with bacon, brie, caramelized onions, maple pepper mayo, and a fried egg.

Fresh Mozzarella Sandwich – a slightly lighter option, this sandwich brought marinated tomatoes, roasted red peppers, arugula, and basil pesto on focaccia bread; add grilled chicken or sliced prosciutto for some protein!

Spicy Crispy Orange Chicken – want to try something outside the box? Try this chicken option with snow peas, baby corn, baby carrots, and a scallion rice cake; make it vegetarian by substituting the chicken for cauliflower. Did I mention there is something for everyone?

Are we boozing? With drinks as delicious as the PHISH (rum, coconut, citrus, and pineapple) and BALLER (vodka, mango, peach and bubbles) – both which come available in fishbowl sizes – how could we not?

Icebox Café
This restaurant is no new tenant to South Florida. A staple in the Miami Beach community for more than 15 years, Icebox Café has been successfully building loyal fans with their focus on healthy, fresh, and all natural ingredients. My favorite part, however, is the bakery, which offers delectable dessert options such as carrot cake, streusel apple pie, and assorted brownies. I’m also looking forward to checking out the pre-packaged breakfast options and $14.95 express lunch – perfect for the 9-5 hustlers in the area.

Menu highlights: Tuna Poke Tacos – you’ll notice a bit of deviation from the offerings of Kings Bowl at Icebox. Everything here is a bit more subdued. Case in point, these Tuna Poke Tacos, which bring almonds, dates, Sriracha, cucumber, sesame oil, and a drizzle of sweet sake. Most of the menu is reflective of this dish, and offers lighter, less indulgent options for those who are bit more cautious with their calorie intake.

Are we boozing? Yes! Icebox Café boasts an extensive list of specialty cocktails and draft beers. During my visit, I sipped on refreshing Havana Club Florida Pink Grapefruit Mojitos (Havana Club Añejo rum, fresh pink grapefruit juice, fresh mint, and lime with guarapo de caña), but I’ll definitely be back for daily happy hour from 4-8PM to try the selection of $4 bites, wine, and craft beer! How could you resist?

Angelo Elia Pizza, Bar & Tapas
Finally making its way to Miami-Dade, City Place Doral is the fifth location for this swank chain named after its owner and master chef. Highlighting his refined Italian technique, Angelo Elia features the best in pizza, tapas, and paninis – all complimented by wine, wine, and more wine.

Homemade Gelato – Panna Cotta (think the Italian version of flan) and Chocolate. This the kind of refreshment we all need in South Florida to make it through our horrid summers.

Are we boozing?  I thought an espresso paired better with the gelato for this visit, but I’ll be sure to check back in on Mondays for half-priced wine bottles. If you love yourself a good glass of wine, make note of that special!

Caitlin’s take: City Place Doral serves a multitude of purposes: shopping, family entertainment, a cocktail after work, etc. Regardless of what the occasion might be, City Place Doral has a bit of everything for everyone! Be sure to check out the featured lunch and happy hour specials at each of the restaurants as well as monthly entertainment activities such as live bands and musical water shows at the central fountain.
